Phishing

Phishing is when an attacker tries to learn your account information and credentials by posing as a reputable entity or person through emails or other forms of communication. Typically, the victim receives a message that appears to be from a known contact or entity. Be cautious when emails ask you for your personal information. These emails usually claim that your account has been compromised and ask you for sensitive information for confirmation. They may also contain malicious links or attachments that are designed to compromise and steal your personal information. Phishing may also be initiated throw telephone calls. Do not give out any sensitive personal information over the telephone unless you initiated the call to a verified point of contact.

 

Pharming

Pharming is a type of attack in which malicious codes are installed on a device or server which misdirects users to fraudulent websites. Fraudsters usually imitate the websites of reputable websites when in fact the websites are fake and not related in any way to the original. Never click on a link in an email. Always manually type or copy and paste the websites’ address into your browser window. 

 

Pop-up Windows

Attackers may also use pop-up windows. These are small windows or advertisements that suddenly appear in another window in addition to the one you are currently viewing. These windows may install adware or spyware on your device without your consent. Many of these pop-ups only enable non-threatening advertisements, but some contain more harmful programs that may compromise your device.

 

Pretext Calling

Pretext calling is when an attacker tries to get your personal information under a false pretense. Pretexters usually imitate survey firms to collect personal information which he then uses to call your financial institution. From here, the pretexter will pretend to be you or an authorized party and ask or request sensitive information about your account. As precaution, kindly decline to participate in any survey or refuse to give out your personal information.

 

Social Engineering

Social engineering is an elaborate form of lying. This is the act of manipulating other individuals into releasing sensitive personal information. To avoid being a victim of social engineering, ensure the individual is a legitimate point of contact and never release your personal information over telephone or email.

 

Password Tips

  • Please ensure that your passwords are strong and use a complex combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. 
  • Change your password regularly.
  • Be sure to use a unique password for different types of accounts.
  • Always log off from your account after use.
  • Do not login on public computers or when using unsecured Wi-Fi connections.
  • Keep your password information confidential and in a secure location.
